State Vehicle Record Request Information

Alabama

Submit a records request along with any required documents through the AL MyDMV Vehicle Records Portal: https://mydmv.revenue.alabama.gov/TAP/?link=RecordReq. After the request is reviewed and approved, you will receive an email stating that the record is available for payment. There is a $10 charge for each record. Government and Law Enforcement agencies are not charged. There is also no fee for records retrieved for court purposes.

Alaska

Persons eligible under the Driver Privacy Protection Act and Alaska statutes may obtain an Alaska Motor Vehicle Record. Complete a Request for Vehicle Record Form 851, sign and date the form, submit payment and any required documents to the Alaska DMV. $10 fee per record. Government agencies not charged.

Arizona

If you are the owner of record on the Arizona title, you may purchase a Title and Registration Motor Vehicle Record (MVR):

  • Online through the request service on AZ MVD Now
  • By mail using the Motor Vehicle Record Request form 46-4416

If you are a prospective buyer of a vehicle currently titled in Arizona, you may ask the vehicle owner to provide you with an Arizona MVR prior to purchase of the vehicle.

  • Vehicles not titled/registered in Arizona during the last 5 years may not be eligible.
  • A Title and Registration MVR contains: owner, vehicle, lien, and brand.
Arkansas

Arkansas is under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act and will not give out information belonging to someone else. If you need information from when you owned the vehicle you may send in a written request along with a copy of your driver's license to request the information. Your request must contain:

  • Vehicle specifics (description, VIN, license plate number, or name/address for alpha search)
  • Reason for requesting the information
  • Fees: $1.00 for owner/lien holder info and $1.00 for each copy of documents requested

Persons eligible under D.C. Official Code §1401.01b (the D.C. Driver Privacy Protection Act) may obtain an unredacted Motor Vehicle Record by mail by submitting the request, along with payment and any required documents.

Hawaii

Individuals eligible under §286-172, Hawaii Revised Statutes, and §19-121, Hawaii Administrative Rules (HAR), may request a copy of their Motor Vehicle Record via the Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) request process.

An Idaho Motor Vehicle Record is available to individuals and businesses who can provide the VIN and title number, and are authorized under the federal Driver Privacy Protection Act and Idaho Code §49-203.

Complete a Request for Vehicle Record online at Tyler Idaho Services or by completing and submitting a Motor Vehicle Request Form with a signature, date, and payment. Credit card orders may be sent via fax or email.

Driver and vehicle records are released in compliance with Driver Privacy Protection Laws. For more information, visit Michigan Department of State.

Individual/non-account holder requests are submitted online via Online Services → Record Sales Services → Request Records.

Account holder requests: Online Services → Record Sales Services → Log in for Record Sales. Records are $11 per searched record ($12 for a certified record). Washington

If you have questions about a vehicle record while titled in Washington State, file a Public Records Request online through the Public Record Request portal: wadolpublicrecords.nextrequest.com, or by mail.

West Virginia

Contact the Records Management Unit at 304-926-3909, or go to the West Virginia DMV website, complete form DMV 100 "Request for Vehicle Information", and mail it with applicable fees to the address on the form. You can also submit your request online using the Online Services Section.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin vehicle record information can be requested by submitting Vehicle/Driver Record Information Request form MV2896 and a $5.00 fee for each record. If personal information is being requested, the form needs one of the authorization boxes checked.

Wyoming

If you are the owner of record on the title, contact the County Clerk in the county where the title was issued for a duplicate title. If you are the registered owner of record on the registration, contact the County Treasurer in the county where the license plate and registration was issued.
